Fly Fishing Isn't For Everyone
from:Many people seem to think that if you fish for trout you must be a fly fisherman. This is the case in the west, at least. Anytime someone finds out that I like to fish, the first thing out of there mouth is something to this effect: "Oh, I love fly fishing too." or "where do you like to fly fish?", and I invariably have to bite my tongue and say, "No, no, I don't fly fish". Then they look at me like I'm a sub-human and say, "oh, you're a spin fisherman". I normally say Yep, and we go our separate ways, but in my mind I'm wondering why these elitist fleas flickers have to be such A-holes?
The point is that fly fishing (or flea flicking as my mentor would refer to it) isn't for everyone. Waving feathers back and forth in the air just never felt right to me. I also want nothing to do with the elitist attitude that many fly fishermen project. Not all of them, of course, just the vast majority that I run into. I also get the distinct impression that many flea flickers do what they do because the think it's 'hip' or 'cool', and that type of thing doesn't work for me either. You know the old saying about following the crowd, right? If you follow the crowd, you're going to end up stepping is shit".
It's always been perplexing to me that fly fishing is considered an art. Waving feathers back and forth in the air doesn't make something an art, does it? Evidently it does to some people. In my opinion the type of fishing that I do is every bit the art that fly fishing proclaims itself to be. Using ultra light gear with very light line, and landing trophy fish is every bit the art that fly fishing supposedly is. Why? Because with this type of fishing the fish get a fighting chance, thus increasing the sport, in my opinion. I suppose at the end of the day it makes little or no difference what I think, but the bottom line is that fly fishing most certainly isn't for everyone. I wholeheartedly agree with the reverend McLain when he said, "anyone who does not know how to catch a fish should not be able to disgrace that fish by catching it". To me, that's the point, no matter what type of fishing you engage in.
